There are a number of reasons why a statement of special educational needs should be drafted specifically. Every teacher/professional picking up a statement should see each and every need the child has.
If follows that the provision/support written into part 3 of the statement should provide for those needs. The support should be clear and should not be left open to individual interpretation. Local Authorities often draft a statement using words and phrases that are very vague. Phrases such as “John should have access to…” should be avoided as it is not precise. When reading a statement we always suggest parents ask the questions Who, When and How, What and Where.
- WHO is providing the support/therapy?
- WHEN and HOW often the support is to be provided?
- WHAT precisely is the support or therapy?
- WHERE is the support therapy to be provided?
We always find there is scope to improve a child’s statement.
